Vrijdag [‘Friday’/ ‘Free Day’] is a cultural centre for art, music and theatre. These disciplines will come together from different locations on Sint Jansstraat in the centre of Groningen.

Vrijdag consists of three new buildings – a working building, a performance building and a living room building – and two historical monuments. Together, they form a whole around an inner courtyard.

The working building stretches out over the total length of the structure and offers studio spaces for visual art, theatre and music. The interior consists of a flexible storage and wall system to make all rooms as multifunctional as possible. The performance building above the shops at the top of Sint Jansstraat features large rehearsal spaces, a large theatre hall and a concert hall with views over the historic inner city. Both buildings are connected on the side of the Groningen Forum by the living room building, which connects the entrees for the performance halls, rehearsal spaces and studios. The facades of the buildings feature matching variations of expressive brick architecture. In short, Vrijdag is a new and fresh face for Groningen.
