For the love of buildings
Buildings are more than individual objects. They define our streets and neighbourhoods. They reflect and encourage the development of our cities. Buildings provide a home for people that is strongly connected to daily life. When successful, they allow for varied use and appropriation. Buildings carry the stories of a city, holding a physical and layered memory of a place. This is why we need buildings that withstand time, buildings that remain relevant in their usability, beauty, and presence. In our ever-changing world, the best buildings are those firmly rooted in the everyday. The ones that belong to a place.
We are building a sustainable future in the existing city. Sometimes this involves creating a new building. More often, it involves reusing existing buildings. For us, sustainability is more than just the conscious use of energy, materials, and the environment. It must also acknowledge the social, economic, cultural agility and resilience a city needs to face in the future. We believe that the most sustainable buildings are built to last while also contributing to the history and character of a city.
As architects, we believe in the elegance of simple solutions to solve complex problems. We work closely together with clients and users, in a circular process of listening, questioning, observing and continual design refinement. Our buildings are defined by a careful understanding of context, their rational basis, and our focused attention on materials and design. We strive to balance simplicity with refinement.
For the love of craftsmanship
Office Winhov received the ARC Oeuvre Award in 2016 and was named ‘Architect of the Year’ in 2023 for its significant contributions to the architectural profession. With a team of 30, the practice collaborates closely with clients and partners on new buildings and the adaptive reuse of existing structures and listed heritage across the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Belgium. A context-driven design philosophy respects historical significance while ensuring continuity within the built environment. The commitment to craftsmanship combines artistic vision with technical precision, producing designs that are adaptive and sustainable.
Office Winhov sees architecture as a collective, evolving discipline, engaging actively in architectural education, research, and involvement on committees, juries, and editorial boards. The practice also founded the ‘Local Heroes’ platform and the ‘Design-by-thinking-of’ lecture series.
Office Winhov comprises a team of 30. We work with clients and partners on new construction and the reuse of existing buildings and listed heritage. Our craftsmanship lies in the combination of the artistic, the technical and the professional, in which personal engagement and the ongoing quest for quality and sustainability are paramount. We believe that architecture is more than just realizing buildings. It is a collective and constantly evolving field. Our voice is heard through architectural education and research, and by participating in committees, juries, and editorial boards. We are also the initiators of the platform 'Local Heroes' and the architecture lecture series 'Design-by-thinking-of'. In this way, we connect locally and internationally with the breadth of the profession and our peers.
Uri Gilad, co-founder, and partner at Office Winhov, focuses on the renovation and extension of buildings of special historical significance, sustainable housing, and multifunctional projects at the intersection between hospitality, culture, and commerce. Developed with a careful understanding of context and an interest in material presence, his work incorporates the environmental, social, and cultural dimensions related to architecture and city planning. Uri is directly involved with the office projects and responsible for the communication with clients. Uri graduated from the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture where he obtained his Master’s ‘Cum Laude’ under Prof. Herman Hertzberger. And now, Uri teaches at the same institution while also regularly giving lectures worldwide on his work and vision. In 2016 he was nominated as a young architect for the Abe Bonnema Prijs and in the same year received the ARC16 Oeuvre Award for the work of Office Winhov. From 2021, Uri holds the position of architect member of Committee 1 (city center) of Amsterdam’s Spatial Quality Committee and is the editor of the yearbook Architecture in the Netherlands.

Jan Peter is directly involved with the office projects in the Netherlands and Switzerland and liable for the communication with the clients. Jan Peter studied at Eindhoven University of Technology and the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam.
